Produce Update
Week of July 22, 2007

Market Update: Markets are flat at reasonably low levels. Demand is light due to increased volume from local deals. Fuel is trending higher. Trucks are getting real tight and we are hitting record high rates. Iceberg Lettuce is enjoying a better market than the rest, probably because local deals can’t produce much iceberg. Leaf products, Broccoli and Cauliflower are flat. Strawberry volume is declining and markets are fluctuating with a wide range in quality and price. Small lemons continue to be a challenge, in fact most fruit is large sized. Oranges available are trending to large sized rather than small. Summer fruit out of California is excellent. Melons are running large with many varieties available.

Avocados: Market remains steady. Supplies are light on #2s as strong demand is keeping stocks low.

Broccoli: Trading is fairly slow on good quality product.

Carrots: Market lower as supplies have improved.

Cauliflower: Plenty of great quality product is available and market is trending lower.

Iceberg Lettuce: Quality is good but steady demand is causing the market to trend higher.

Leaf Lettuce: Demand remains light on product sourcing from Salinas.

Celery: Salinas and Santa Maria are both shipping product and the market remains steady at low levels.

Oranges: Expect a short crop of Valencia’s this season. Supplies are tight on small sized fruit but prices remain steady.

Lemons: Summer trend will be higher with tight supply on small fruit.

Melons: Abundant supplies especially on large sized fruit. There are a variety of melons available in the market.

Potatoes: Firm market on foodservice cartons and #2s while other potatoes remain steady and low.

Onions: Supplies are improving and market is trending slightly lower.

Strawberries: Trading is active on excellent quality product. Supplies available to handle summer demand.
